Group: Charlie, Lucy, Joseph and Myself.
9:30 start the group was given a briefing on the day, what we were to expect and how we are to help and communicate with each other. Also the journal students would be given us the orders of what they wanted and needed for their news programme.
We were all assigned thing to do and Charlie was Producer, so he gave us the assignments. Anything we had issues or concerns with he would be the person to confirm the work with. The idea was to make sure that as a group we communicated to each other, to help the pressure and any help we needed we could give to each other.
I was assigned to do two tables, one was a surf table and the other was a tide table, this was in connections with the Weather News. I was given some writing, and the rest was left to me to create the table and be imaginative with what I had, and the freedom I had, because nothing really in particular was asked for.
I first thought about the colour as Live at 5 uses the colour blue allot, I decided that’s the colour I’d go for to keep the theme. I went on to think about what sort of graphics I would use for the first table, which was the Surf Table. I thought about putting a wave in the background, a still image, but then I thought about a moving wave which would be nicer. Peter Felstead gave me a graphics CD that had moving waves, and water splashes that I could use. I picked one them, and imported it into After Effects.
I went on to do the text, which was easier enough to do. I wanted the text to fade on to screen, with each word, one by one, and I didn’t really know how to do this, so I asked Charlie the Producer to show me how to it, and he helped me. I also realised that even though the text was white on a blue/black background, the text need to stand out more. By getting the text to stand out I need some sort of outline around the text, or some form of glow around the edges of the text. After a quick play around on After Effects trying to figure it out for myself, I again asked the Producer to show me how to this. Finished with my graphic I rendered my work as I had finished my first piece. There were no issues or problems, apart from the fact I wasn’t quite sure how to do certain things.
Surf Tonight
I went on to do my Tide piece and with this I decided to use the same graphic, the wave, but make it a different colour, like a nice sunset orange. I copied the graphic I did before, and changed the colour of the wave and the words. Doing the same thing to make the text stand out, and also the fade on screen graphic, this was very simple to do, as I had done it the first time round.
Everything seemed to go well at this point, within the group I had rendered out both graphics, and although, Charlie and Lucy were having slight issues with the weather map, and Joseph had minor issues doing the title straps, everyone was very calm. A lot of communicating was going on between the whole group we all asked each other as a group what we thought of each others work, and if any of it needed any changes.
We finished early, just around lunch time, and nothing really came up, or nothing more was really needed from us.
High Tide
A Student who was working on the Global News asked us to do some graphics for them. We all had a new assignment handed to us. I was given a milk graphic to do, I was given two words, and a very bad image of a person holding some milk bottles behind what looked like a rubbish dump. I decided to find a nicer image of milk bottles of all different size, behind a white background. I imported this image from the Internet into After Effects. I then put the text on top of the image which was in black.
I noticed the image kind of stood out more then the text, so I needed to change this, by blurring the image so that you could clearly read the text. I used a blurred Affect on the image, I made it so the image slowly blurred, and then made the text of each word fade on to screen, I made sure the image was blurred just enough so you could still recognise the milk bottles. With Charlie’s approval of the image, he advised me about a few tweaks of the graphic. I rendered the graphic and everyone was very much happy with what was created.
We then went on to watch the live showing of Live at 5 in the journalist’s studio, and I got a chance to see my work being used. Charlie had told me that the journalist students wanted to be able to stand in front of my graphics, but due to the fact they didn’t tell us before hand, and it was way too late to do anything about it, they decided to talk over the graphics while being shown. It was really nice to watch the work being used, and it was also great to know that the journalist students like the groups work.
I found that it was really good working with the group and everyone communicated really well. There was no big issues with the work, we all helped and gave each other advice on our work, and Charlie the Producer was very good at keeping us up to date on anything we needed to know, or anything we need to do. All in all it was a very for filling day. I feel I got the experience to take up the challenge to create something using my own initiative, and achieved what both I and the client wanted.
